Gummy Interactive sees 680% increase in visits!

Anybody out there who understands the benefits of blogs and consumer generated content would be interested to know how Gummy Interactive received nearly 700% more visitors in a single day! We were delighted to see that an interactive design firm in Southern California stumbled upon our site one day to find out what Gummy Interactive was all about and used a public forum to comment on our services, driving traffic to www.gummyinteractive.com.

Not all visitors are quality visitors.

However, don’t be fooled by statistics in this case. Obviously the goal of a website is to attract visitors, but don’t let statistics be your only tool to assessing success. It can give you a quick week-at-a-glance peek at the performance of your site, but you need to always dig a little deeper to understand what the real catalyst is. With the Gummy site, we noticed a significant increase in site visitors for a particular day and quickly realized (with a backlink check) that a forum thread was created on our behalf from a company in Southern California commenting on our company name.

To their amazement (or amusement), our freelance marketing firm had a similar name as theirs. For some reason, this has created quite a stir as they felt threatened solely by our company name. This company was using a forum as a driver to build themselves up by posting comments on our behalf, just because of a coincidence in a company name separated.

In this case, a significant increase in site visitors was not necessarily a good thing which was clearly visible from the malicious comments posted by these folks in California. This considerable increase was not the quality of visitors which Gummy Interactive tries to attract. But what I don’t quite understand is why it became such a fuss?

In a day-and-age where consumer-generated information is valued even more heavily than the service provided, you must always be aware of social/viral marketing. Many times, this can be very useful in your marketing campaign, however it needs to be monitored otherwise it can quickly become very problematic. With consumer-generated content (by blogging in this case) as a catalyst in marketing, it is often difficult to stand up for yourself. In the end, you have to learn from experience, take it as constructive criticism and grow from it.

A word to the wise in a situation like is not to get emotional and over react by commenting on emotion. This type of rebuttal is never good for your company and will more then likely follow you around. You will never win in a he said/she said argument with an online so it isn’t worth the investment of your time.

In the end guess I can see where these guys are coming from. A name is really that important. I hope Gummy Interactive never gets confused for this firm to the West. Gummy Interactive is a marketing firm that is built on quality, service and looking out for our customers’ unique interests. We are not threatened by a firm miles across the county spending time and resources discussing how they are better than a couple of guys from Iowa. We would rather spend our time making sure that each and every customer of ours is working towards their website goals.

We thank these guys for the backlink though.
